A Work Tail [Dec. 22nd, 2009|10:39 am]

[music |Lady GaGa - Bad Romance | Powered by Last.fm]

Every so often my job is a little strange.

Last night I'm sitting at the reception desk, minding my own business, watching a downloaded TV show. Suddenly I hear a thump. A small thump. Like something falling. Or landing, rather, after falling. So I take a look-see around, because it sounded close, and on the counter at eye-level, not three feet away, is a mouse.

Yes, a mouse.

In which our hero saves a mouse )

Yeah, it's horribly unbutch, but fuck you. The day I kill adorable mice is the day I will sell back every Brian Jacques and CS Lewis book I own, as well as any Don Bluth, Disney or Pixar movie that has a rodent in it.

Although it did occur to me after I'd let him go that I have no idea if he was a wild mouse that snuck in, or the offspring of wild mice who'd nested in the building, or if he was an escaped lab mouse. I'm hoping he was a wild mouse. If he had science experiments done on him, and suddenly he mutates and we're overrun with 50-foot mice rampaging through town a la Night of the Lepus, umm... my bad.

I've been pretty on the fence about Kick-Ass judging it solely by the first trailer.

But now? Now I am all in.

The soundtrack really adds so much to this one.

Man, 2010 is going to be the year of Nic Cage, isn't it? Deranged Batman knockoff in Kick-Ass, loopy master wizard in Sorcerer's Apprentice, and then heretical paladin in Season of the Witch.

I'm still loving Dawn of War. What it's doing, in a way I've never clicked with before, is teaching me that my strategy techniques may be lumbering and without finesse, but as long as they're working then they're perfectly acceptable.

I'd probably get torn to pieces in multiplayer, but I don't really care, I'm enjoying the atmosphere and staging of the singleplayer campaign.

Okay, this was funny [Dec. 21st, 2009|08:23 pm]
tunaf
Last night I went to pick Briana up for Christmas break. She had some packing still to do, so I helped a bit and generally hung around in her room waiting for her to finish.
One of her roomates let a "Oh Shit" slip out, at which she looked quickly at me and nervously said "sorry".
Briana said "What are you saying 'sorry' for, he doesn't care".
True enough.
A few minutes later a young man walks by, pokes his head in the door, and says "What the fuck's going on?", and then notices me standing there.
Again, the nervous look and the "sorry".
Briana says "He really doesn't care you guys. Look, 'fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck'".

This happens a couple more times. Each time someone lets a bit of profanity lose and then notices "The Old Guy" standing in the corner the look nervous and apologize.
It's hysterical. :)

Also did the last of my Christmas shopping yesterday. Yay, done!

Saturday we went to a party at Corinna's house. It was a last minute affair, hastily thrown together because some of the cousins were unhappy that no family get together was to be had.
Most everyone of my mother's family was there, with a few exceptions. Markie was at a wrestling match, Jenna and Samantha are living out of state, Emily's in poor health, and I have no idea what's wrong with Patricia.
Corinna talked to me a bit about things. Patricia's retreating into herself, not going out and not seeing anyone, Corinna and Mark are about to go under financially, and the rest of my family seems crazier with each passing year.
While I enjoyed the chance to visit with my family, it was mixed with regret that they are not all doing as well as I'd like them to be.

Oh, and with only an inch of snow on the ground the plow truck has managed once again to hit our mailbox.

Don't Ask. Don't Tell. That's the policy studio Warner Brothers was hoping for as it rolls out its massive media campaign leading up to the Christmas day opening of Sherlock Holmes. The only problem -- they forgot to tell Robert Downey Jr., the film's flamboyant star.

"Robert can't stop talking about the world's most famous Bromance. It's making studio publicists very nervous. It's almost like Downey is messing with them," a movie insider giggled about Downey's repeated hinting that Holmes' and BFF Dr. Watson's interest in each other might go further than just solving crimes.

"Two men who happen to be roommates, wrestle a lot and share a bed," Downey has said.

Downey told Letterman, "They were homos?... why don't we observe the clip and let the audience decide if he [Holmes] just happens to be a very butch homosexual."

Robert Downey is basically Tony Stark irl, isn't he.

My daughter continues to spiral into shojo madness. She has nearly worked her way through Ouran High School Host Club and has dropped multiple hints that getting Fruits Basket under the tree would be aces. Thus far these things seem fairly harmless, but I fear how deep down the rabbit hole this thing can go...

Maybe I'm just being a dumb, overprotective dad here, but I really don't know. This kind of thing is way outside my geek experience. Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi, you're my only hope.

The best weekend in a while [Dec. 21st, 2009|08:27 am]

templar569
Why? Because every single thing we "had" to go to - outside of my son's 9 AM basketball game on Saturday - was cancelled due to the snow. No dinner party for work, no pitching lessons, no baseball clinic, no visit to my in-laws' side of the family. None of it. Just some shoveling, a little remote working from home, and lots and lots of sledding, snowball fighting and watching mediocre movies and episodes of Naruto, just the five of us. We even got dressed up for dinner at home on Saturday, which was actually kind of fun.

It was probably the first weekend since our vacation in the summer where we didn't have something on the schedule. For my younger readers it may be hard for you to relate, but if you go the spouse/family route as I have one day, unless your kids are complete shut-ins and your spouse hates his/her family, your life will revolve around their schedules and a weekend of "nothing" will seem as if it fell from heaven accompanied by a choir of seraphim.

End of season [Dec. 20th, 2009|11:22 pm]

thefearless
Tomorrow as soon as my last final is over, I'll be leaving Chicago. It won't be forever. I'll probably be back in a week or so.

The desire to get out of here has been growing stronger every day. I don't want to spend the holidays at home with family. I don't want to spend them with friends. I just want to be someplace where I don't have to think about who I am. It's not just the December memories. This is something that has been building up for a while, and I need some way to deal with it before it takes me down completely. I figure that abandoning James Vergara for a while and being somebody completely different will help me accomplish that.

I guess I'm just posting this because I don't want people to worry over my disappearance. I've told a few people where I'm going, but I've also told a few people mistruths about where I'm going, just because I don't want anyone knowing my whereabouts. I've told people that I'll be boarding a plane. Or I'll be boarding a train. Or I'll be renting a car and going on a road trip. Anyway, I'll be all right.

Never Enough, a movie about sex, money, and parking garages.

There's a billboard for it I'd always seen while driving into SF but would always forget to look it up when I got to a computer. The trailer looks horrible, and not in the so-bad-it's-hilarious way that The Room has. Still, I kinda wanna watch it with peeps and see just how bad it is.

The good news is, they've plowed nearly every street in my neighborhood. The bad news is, they didn't get ours. It's kind of hard to right now; it ends up someone had to abandon their car in the middle of the street Friday night. He must've been hating it, it was just yards from his driveway. There's enough room that the neighborhood pickups can drive around it, but no way a plow can get by.

The far end of our driveway, though, is now quite passable. We hired the kids across the street to help. Two out of three cars are dug out, but mine will be staying put for a few more days--because of the curve of the drive and where we had to pile the snow, it's nearly impossible for me to pull out right now. But we have one free, so that's good. We'll have to shovel one more time after the plow goes by, but hopefully that's it.

New locks, plus lengthy screed on self-hater in Self magazine [Dec. 20th, 2009|11:37 am]

cloverest
Yesterday, my boyfriend and I bought new doorknobs and deadbolts for the front and back doors. The old hardware was original to the house when it was built 30 years ago, we believe. One of the past owners of the house replaced some of the original hardware and fixtures in the house with brushed nickel while leaving the faded, flaking, and filthy dark brassy-colored metal in a lot of other places, including the front and back doors. Now that we've done the front and back doors, we regret not having replaced them sooner. They look really nice, the latches catch much more easily, it's easier to shut and lock the doors without a fight from the lock, the dogs can no longer let themselves in or out the back door by jumping on the handle, and the new bolts are not key-operated-only. I feel safer having a working lock on the back door again. Ahh, the illusion of safety, as though someone couldn't just bust the window if they wanted in.

I got the new Self magazine in the mail yesterday morning. Reading it is a mixed bag these days. I remember enjoying it a lot more 4 years ago when a coworker introduced me to it. I participated in its annual fitness program, the SELF Challenge, and it started my interest in improving my fitness and health. Now, it's got a lot of fitness, but also the regular women's magazine crap of beauty products, sex tips, and celebrity profile fluff. I'm sure they had some of it back then, but it seemed as though the focus was more on the fitness and wellness angle; I may be mistaken, but I think I remember pages of recipes. This issue, there were pilates moves in the tear-out exercise of the month pages and a workout routine that looks like it would kill me. Hehe.

The major downer, the thing that made me regret my renewed subscription, was a story by a woman who was 172 pounds and completely miserable and self-hating. I'm shorter than her, I'm more overweight than she was at her professed heaviest, but shit, at least I like myself. This woman is still dealing with issues related to her father and food-as-comfort, and she's aimed a lot of loathing onto herself for, on the surface, being fat. Which is understandable, except it takes on a transitive property and distributes that hatred of fat to every other woman reading that article who's supposed to tsk-tsk at those poor fatties being so fat, or the women who are supposed to sob along with her as she throws a box of snack cakes out the car window to prevent herself from eating them. I am not ashamed of who I am because of what my body looks like, and I feel alienated from this article, since its audience is a person who has such shame as a core part of their self view.

I understand that people who don't like themselves tend to criticize themselves very harshly, but her attitude toward her weight bordered on toxic - and was a little capricious for me to believe she will be happy with mere weight loss. She went from completely self-loathing to hopeful that she could be beautiful and sexy after several months, and then dismissive of a friend described as newly overweight, doubting, and catty, all in a matter of 27 pounds. Her struggle to lose the weight was not very inspirational - if anything, I felt completely discouraged by her attitude - and I didn't empathize with her at all. I may be overweight, but my self worth is not fucking tied to the scale, as it seemed to have been for her, and my judgment of other people is not similarly tied to how large they are. I mean, how much sheer self-loathing she had for her fat self was most glaringly evident from her word choice, describing pants as being like sausage casing, gobbling and slurping things down her gullet. Those are dismissive, primal verbs that you assign to animals. Because fat people aren't people. Perhaps for her, she gained weight and felt disgusted by herself through eating snack cakes in her car by the box, but it's not so for a lot of us fatties, and it bothered me that she chose to highlight those conspicuous, cliched forms of shame rather than the slow build of fried, fatty foods and snack foods, poor food choices over time, that do in the weight of so many people in this country.

I am sorry she had such a bad time with her family and issues with eating and food. I just wish she didn't have to distribute so much haterade on her journey to her happier place. I hope she finds peace with herself and her family issues and changes that attitude of hers. I just don't want to read any more of her shit until she gets there.

spoiler-free, I promise [Dec. 20th, 2009|01:58 am]

Avatar is... okay I guess.

The plot and the dialogue are utter crap. I mean I sort of expected that, but in the first half hour there are lines being tossed about like they're trying to hit the next generation of memorable action film lines. BUT not in a good way, none of the lines stick. I'm usually good about remembering things like, you know, the main characters, but at the moment I can only recall the names of Jake and Grace, the rest are just fuzzy memories.

What puts this from "fuck this movie I'm going to spend 3 hours watching something better" to "okay" is that it is god-damn beautiful. I'm a huge curmudgeon on CG and the mo-cap was solid and fluid and not at all like that shitty stuff like Polar Express/Christmas Carol. You can get a much better scope of acting with what they used. The visuals are gorgeous, and to be honest the culture of the Na'vi and the wildlife of Pandora were interesting and well fleshed out.

Also the fact there's swearing and violence and stuff in this movie makes those Avatar Happy Meal toys all the more hilarious.

In short, if your name is Aaron, you'll fucking love it.

After the movie we went to the Salt Lick, but I was starving at the Alamo so I already ate. Got half a sausage sandwich to polish off before the night is through. We watched the MST3k version of Santa Claus, which featured Satan (different from Lucifer) tryign to fuck up Santa's day and Santa's love of Christ, and somehow Merlin was involved. Also Santa has a bunch of children from around the world held prisoner as his slaves, in racial stereotype costume. After that it was Best In Show which was not as good as other Guest films but still funny regardless.

Browns (+3) CHIEFS
Falcons (+6) JETS
49ers (+8) EAGLES
Texans (-12.5) RAMS
Dolphins (+4) TITANS
Raiders (+14) BRONCOS
Bengals (+6.5) CHARGERS
Packers (+2) STEELERS
Buccaneers (+6.5) SEAHAWKS
Vikings (-9) PANTHERS
Giants (-3) REDSKINS

LAST WEEK
Kento: 12-4
Tam: 11-5
Ryan: 10-6
Bob: 9-7
Yoj: 9-7
Maggie: 7-9
Joe: 5-11

OVERALL
Ryan: 114-91-3
Kento: 110-95-3
Tam: 109-96-3
Yoj: 108-97-3
Bob: 105-100-3
Joe: 104-101-3
Maggie: 90-115-3

Again, QUICK Reasoning!

1. RAVENS. It is a priviledge to bet against the Bears.
2. PATRIOTS. I don't like the Bills more than I like the Patriots.
3. CARDINALS. The trap/let down game was last week. They pour it on here.
4. BROWNS. Both teams suck. At least I get 3 points of leeway if I pick the Browns.
5. FALCONS. I know the Falcons have some hurt people, but I don't think the Jets are all that good.
6. 49ERS. I had the Eagles here, but I think the heavy snow will make for a low scoring game. And the 49ers aren't bad.
7. DOLPHINS. This was a really difficult game to pick. I'm going with the Dolphins, but I'm ROOTING for the Titans.
8. TEXANS. The Texans run up the score on bad teams.
9. BRONCOS. No Gradkowski, no picking the Raiders.
10. CHARGERS. My pre-season Super Bowl Winner!
11. PACKERS. I just think this year is a lost cause for the Steelers. And Polumalu being out really hurts them.
12. SEAHAWKS. I don't care here.
13. VIKINGS. They've got too much talent to go down here, and I think they win by 10.
14. GIANTS. The Redskins find ways to lose!

My Picks: Ravens, Patriots, Cardinals, Browns, Falcons, 49ers, Texans, Dolphins, Broncos, Chargers, Packers, Seahawks, Vikings, Giants
Maggies Picks: Ravens, Patriots, Lions, Chiefs, Jets, Eagles, Rams, Titans, Broncos, Chargers, Steelers, Seahawks, Panthers, Giants

Weather Update [Dec. 19th, 2009|01:54 pm]

ranchonmars
Because I know you're all soooo anxious to hear! >.>

At 4 am, I went to peek out the blinds and couldn't see anything. I turned out the light, and still couldn't. Ends up it was because a foot of snow was blocking the window. (Window's base is at ground level.) I pulled them up and saw the yard was filled with snow, the shed roof holding at least a foot and a half of it, everything glowing orange with big flakes still coming down. It was lovely!

And it still is. The snow has stopped but the sky remains white, the wind just the barest of breezes. I can go outside without getting chilled to the bone, a good thing since we have a 50-yard long driveway to shovel. Dad cleaned off the steps (we have flagstone steps leading up from the door that are seven feet long and three feet deep, but only about six inches high), and I got to work making a path to the end of the driveway. It went fine until we got to his car, left at the end of the driveway for easy exit. He decided to clean it off first, which seemed like a good idea, but wasn't. All it did was double the snow load, compress what was already there, and where he walked, it was smooshed onto the asphalt so we can't get it up.

But the rest went fine--it's a good snow to shovel, light, fluffy, *perfect* for making snow forts. I have a path to his driver's side door, and the boys across the street are going to do the rest of the drive later. In retrospect I should've put my car next to his, but it's not like we're going anywhere until the street gets plowed and we dig ourselves out of that, too. (Note to self: Invest in sled dog team.)

The only real glitches so far are A: I've strained my right wrist, and it's starting to hurt (but a hot bath should take care of it) and B: it really hit home to me today that I am going to be in the house with my parents for the next three or four days, straight. No one going, no one coming. Three to four days. We love each other, but maybe this is a good time to take up drinking. (For them, not just me!)

My dad's snow pants, by the way? His old dress pants. He's the best dressed shoveller on the block!

I'll try to snap pictures later, it really is something to see a foot of snow outside my window. I can't remember the last time that happened.

Stuck in the office doing some overtime. It's actually kind of fun though, just reordering map entries for some locations magazine and making some decent overtime pay for it. Cutting into my writing time a bit but I've managed to double up elsewhere by bringing a usb thing in and at least working on drafts during slow weekdays. I finished the preliminary re-draft of Overdue, need to give it a second going over and I think it'll clock in at around 3k words, which is respectable for a self-contained short story set in over one scene. Now I'm working on the Aztec one; I have a very simple skeleton of the story structure written out and I've cranked out almost 2k words, probably going to end up 7-8k. I would be further along but I keep doing research and getting sucked into reading Aztec mythological stories or studies of their military and ruling structures in their entirety for fun.

I really like where it's going though. I made it a lot less of a stereotypical swords and sorcery in mesoamerica thing and instead it's an alternate history with very small hints of steampunk and a sprinkling of neo-fantasy. It's about a generation into the industrialization of the Aztecs and there's something of a clash between the secular/casual religious factions and the old guard, who have become something of a minority. The emperor is an enlightened tyrant who believes that there are logical explanations behind the myths of the god awakening and slaughtering the spaniards for their trespass, but he still utilizes his semi-divine standing as ruler to enforce his more and more secular views and persecution of the priesthood. This particular story is from the point of view of a veteran itzcoatl, or obsidian serpent, one of the high court's enforcers as he hunts down a heretical priest who is performing illegal rituals and trying to revive the rampant human sacrifices that kept the empire going generations ago. All while preaching that society is becoming corrupt because they ceased thinning the herd with those sacrifices, and they are beginning to offend the sleeping gods just as much as the conquistadors did.

It's a fun setting to write in. Steel-plated step pyramids belching smoke into the air, standing in stark contrast to the people who still wear loincloths because they annihilated not only the spanish but also the "traitor" tribes who allied with Cortez, meaning that they haven't seen open warfare in over a hundred years. They have no need to develop armor or weaponry as a result, even with the discovery of metalcrafting.

Thank you, Netflix, very much. I get to watch coming-of-age-romantic movies that make me miss my boyfriend very much. I also get to watch all the seasons of Xena: Warrior Princess. I don't know why, but I just really love this show. Lucy Lawless is beautiful. I absolutely love her eyes.

Eight inches on the stairs, just under a foot at the top of the stairs, but the trash can at the end of the drive has at least 14 inches on it. I'd go up and take a picture for reference but the stairs have gotten slushy, so just no.

And it's still coming down. Probably taper off by morning, but still, they weren't kidding. This is a lotta snow.

Guess who gets to shovel it tomorrow! (Hopefully the neighbor kid, but probably not.)
